Each day our body receives between 50 to 100 nutrients from our food and supplements. The six essential nutrients to life are :1. ProteinA major component of many body structures, used for the building and repairing of body tissues.2. CarbohydratesThe primary source of energy fuels for our muscles and brain. Most of the food we eat should come from this essential nutrient but from complex carbohydrates not simple carbohydrates.3. FatFat is a source of concentrate energy and provides twice as much energy calories as protein or carbohydrate by weight and helps transport the fat soluble vitamins. A majority of fats should come in a form known as essential fatty acids (Omega 3 and Omega 6) and less of the saturated fatty acids like dairy products, margarine and butter.4. VitaminsAll vitamins are essential for growth and health and to regulate all body functions there is fat soluble vitamins (A,D,E,K) and water soluble (B vitamins and vitamin C). We must obtain these through our food on a daily basis.5. MineralsEach mineral has a specific and important role in our body and also work together to regulate body functions and work in combination with enzymes, hormones, vitamins and transport substances. Some are co-factors for enzymes and participate in nerve transmission, muscle concentration, cell permeability, tissue rigidity and structure, blood formation, acid base balance, fluid regulation, protein metabolism. They are the macro-minerals (calcium, chloride, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium and sodium) and the micro-minerals (chromium, cobalt, copper, fluoride, iodine, iron, manganese, molyodenum and selenium)6. WaterThe most over looked nutrient, that is necessarily to life about 2/3 of our body weight is water. After oxygen for breathing, water is the most important element for life, yet most people do not drink the amount needed daily, at least 2 litres per day. |
